Insulin Resistance and Diet

For those who have difficulty with losing weight, and think that they might have insulin resistance, it is very important to understand the relationship between insulin resistance and diet.

Under normal circumstances, blood sugar metabolism is carried out without difficulty.  You eat a piece of cake.  The cake is broken down and sugar is released into the blood.  The rise in blood sugar causes the pancreas to release insulin to signal the cells to allow the transfer of the blood sugar (glucose) into the cells.  Finally, the blood sugar returns to normal levels and the cells process the available glucose.

Pretty simple…right?

Well, there’s an impressive biochemical process that goes on with this and a large stone in the path can easily stop the progress.

But, for those with insulin resistance, a proper diet is something that must be focused on, if the insulin resistance is ever to be reversed.  So, let’s talk about several dietary changes that can be made to help you with your insulin reversal process.

First,  don’t think of it as a “diet”.  Diets are those scary things that you start when you don’t like what’s going on…and then you stop when it gets tough.  Get rid of the thoughts that you need to diet.

Instead, this must be a lifestyle change.  You must make slow changes and then stick with them.  This won’t happen overnight (just as you didn’t get this way overnight).  But, be assured, that if you make changes for the long haul, you’ll achieve success.

Second, get rid of the “taters”.  Unfortunately, potatoes are one of those foods that have a high glycemin index.  Translate that to insulin resistance talk and it means: They’re generally not good.

But, before I get letters from all of the potato activists, please know that you must control your potato intake…you don’t need to eliminate them entirely.  I’m sure you can reduce your potato intake by cutting portion sizes or skipping potatoes that you usually have at every meal.

Of note, if you’re going to eat some potatoes, buy Yuma Gold as they have a lower glycemic index.

Finally, slow down.  Don’t eat so fast.

By eating quickly, you are able to fill your stomach before the stomach is able to signal the brain that you are full.  By slowing your eating down, the full response from the stomach will get to your brain so you have the time to stop eating.
